How to Properly Store Umeshu to Keep it Fresh and Tasty for Longer

Umeshu, a traditional Japanese liqueur made from Ume fruit, is a deliciously sweet and tart beverage that is enjoyed by many. It is perfect for sipping on any occasions, and it also makes a great addition to cocktails and desserts. However, once you have opened a bottle of Umeshu, it can be challenging to know how to store it properly to maintain its flavor and quality. Let’s explore some tips and tricks to help you keep your Umeshu fresh and tasty for as long as possible.

Keep it Cool

One of the most important things to remember when storing Umeshu is to keep it cool. Heat and sunlight can damage the delicate flavors of the liqueur and cause it to spoil quickly. So, it is essential to store the Umeshu in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources like stoves or radiators.

Refrigerate after Opening

Once you have opened the bottle, it’s better to store it in the refrigerator. Refrigeration helps to slow down the oxidation process that occurs when air comes into contact with the liqueur, preserving its flavors for longer. Umeshu can last up longer in the refrigerator if stored properly. CHOYA recommends to finish drinking it within a couple months after opening.

*For CHOYA products with an alcohol content of 10% or less, we recommend to consume them as soon as possible after opening.

Seal the Bottle Tightly

Another crucial factor in keeping Umeshu fresh is to make sure the bottle is sealed tightly. Air is one of the main culprits behind the loss of flavor and quality in Umeshu, so it is best to keep it in an airtight container. If you have opened a bottle with a cork stopper, make sure the cork is pushed in tightly to prevent air from getting in. Alternatively, you can transfer the Umeshu to a smaller bottle with a screw-top lid that fits tightly.

Umeshu may be categorized as a type of Sake or wine (Plum Wine), but its recommended storage period after opening is significantly different. So, now that you know the proper storage methods, you can enjoy your Umeshu wisely without wasting any and savor it until the end. Don't let your Umeshu go to waste; keep it fresh and tasty for as long as possible. Cheers!
